Lord Edward is the husband of Lady Tantamount. He is a
scientist that is currently working on stem cells with newts. So far his major scene has been the party at
his house. His life philosophy seems to be that people should have a balanced
life. He does not have greed or ambitions to gain power. This can be shown by
his statements to Webley, a power hungry politician. He says “Progress! You politicians
always talking about it. As though it wer going to last. Indefinitely. […] you
ought to take a few lessons in my subject. […] what do you propose to do about phosphorus”
(Huxley 56). Edward seems to believe in progress, but from a realistic
standpoint. He wants to progress to better the world, not himself.
